Geoffrey Holder (19302014) was a true multidisciplinary artist; actor, dancer, choreographer, painter, director, and photographer. Born in Trinidad, he moved to New York in the 1950s and became a principal dancer with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet, later building an acclaimed career across theater, film, television, and the visual arts.
Photography remained a quieter part of his practice. “Adam” is his first and only photography book. Consisting entirely of black-and-white studies of the male nude, it reflects Holder’s lifelong fascination with movement, balance, and form.
His background as a dancer is evident throughout the book. Bodies twist, stretch, and rest with a sculptural presence, while light and shadow emphasize texture and shape.
