Italian Square Plexiglas and Metal Catch-all tray, 1960s

Italy, 1960s. Plexiglass was then making its way into desk and table objects, often set off with gilt metal for a more refined result. This square catchall is a characteristic example.

A thick block of clear plexiglass, with rounded front edges, is framed on its upper face by a slim gilt-brass surround. At its centre, a removable circular dish in silver-plated metal fits into a carved recess practical for emptying or cleaning. The transparency of the plexiglass lets the light play through, while the metal adds a graphic note.

Good vintage condition: a few surface scratches on the plexiglass and some patina on the metal parts, with no chips or cracks. The piece comes from a Milanese collection.

Measuring 17 cm square and 4.5 cm high, this catchall finds its place on a desk or an entryway console, to hold keys, jewellery or loose change. An object both functional and decorative.
