From the forward: “The subject of this book is the making of Japanese woodblock prints. Japanese woodblock prints carry on the old tradition of the world-famous ukiyo-e, but the techniques for making modern woodblock prints are quite different from those of the earlier tradition. In this book, primary emphasis has been placed on modern print methods, and the discussion of appreciation omitted in favor of a later occasion.

Ukiyo-e was an art form expressed through the medium of printing, and the woodblock prints presented in this book are also the means through which art is expressed. The method is one of great freedom, and therein lies the excitement of woodblock prints.”
