Italian Catch-all in Plexiglass with Gilt Metal and Amber Burl Wood Lid, 1970s

Italy, 1970s. Still in the spirit of plexiglass paired with burl wood, this square catch-all adds a further touch: a removable gilt metal dish, nestled at its centre.

The base, in thick plexiglass with faceted corners, is set with an amber burl wood veneer that traces a geometric frame around a round, detachable gilt metal dish, for holding keys, jewellery or loose change. The contrast of materials cool and transparent, warm and grained, bright and gilded makes for a dense, graphic object.

Good overall condition: the plexiglass and wood are well preserved, the gilt metal shows a light patina consistent with its age. A piece that presents very well for its age.

At 14.5 cm wide by 3.5 cm high, this catch-all sits on a console, a desk or an entryway table. A practical, sculptural object, typical of Italian refinement in the seventies.
